British health care products store Holland & Barrett has opened four sites in the Western Cape alongside existing South African pharmacies of the Family Care group. It is set to open a R3.5 million stand-alone store in Cape Town before the end of 2009.

American retail sales ambush indicates recession has dug in for now by Lans

Retail sales in the US unexpectedly fell last month, as soaring job losses has forced consumers to pull back.

The 1.1 percent decrease followed a 0.3 percent gain in February that was stronger than previously estimated, the Commerce Department said yesterday in Washington.

Car dealers, electronics stores and restaurants led the decline.

Less consumer spending heading into the second quarter means that the recession is likely to persist.

“While the March data isn’t enough to make us rethink expectations that the worst is over, it does serve as a reminder that the road out of this recession might be as painful as the recession itself,” said Guy Lebas, the chief economist with Janney Montgomery Scott in Philadelphia.

A slide in local CD and DVD sales had weighed on total sales, said the Retailers Liaison Committee.
