Washington – US consumers brushed off rising petrol prices and slumping home sales to storm the malls last month, pushing retail sales up by the largest amount in 16 months.
The commerce department said sales surged 1.4 percent from April to May, double the rise analysts expected.
Retail sales fell 0.1 percent in April. May strength was enjoyed by car dealers, department stores, clothing stores and hardware stores. – Sapa-AP
