In the short term there are obvious reasons for retailers to sell out to private equity and then be delisted, they get access to capital they didn’t have before and can therefore grow aggressively. They have more flexibility and less shareholders to answer to, so in theory if managed properly private equity should be good for the industry?

Johannesburg – Leading construction and engineering group Murray & Roberts (M&R) would join the JSE’s Top40 index in place of Edgars Consolidated Stores (Edcon), which would be delisted, the JSE said yesterday.
