CLOTHING RETAILERS While acknowledging the recent contribution of retailers Foschini, Pepkor and Woolworths to the local clothing manufacturing sector, the department of trade and industry’s Iqbal Sharma has again lashed out.
Sharma’s first target was predictably the media, which he accused of reporting that the department had backed down after it granted some Chinese quota exemptions to these retailers. This was after they committed themselves to job creation in the local manufacturing sector. He said all the department had done was show flexibility in its approach to the controversial matter.
